Abernethy Elementary
Abernethy is a Safe Routes to School (SR2S) pilot school that will participate in a year of ongoing walk+bike programs provided by parents, other community members, community leaders and local, state, and federal governments. These programs are aimed to improve the health and well-being of children by enabling and encouraging them to walk and bicycle to school. Abernethy will also have programs that examine conditions around the school and facilitate the planning, development, and implementation of projects and activities that improve and reduce traffic and air pollution in the vicinity of school. These programs will help to make bicycling and walking to school a safer and more appealing transportation alternative thus encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle from an early age. The pilot schools will serve as examples of what can be accomplished for the expansion of SR2S into more schools in the future.
Abernethy is also this year's 'media school', meaning that a press advisory will be released, VIP's and athletes will attend, speak and perform, and members of the press are expected to attend and possibly report on and photograph the event. Look for an article or photograph in local papers and TV news shows on October 5.
